Helen Edwards
Melbourne born and based, Helen began painting professionally in 1993 following a teaching career in Primary and Special Education. Her portraits, figures and landscapes in oils, pastel and acrylics reflect a Realist-Impressionist style, and seek to convey not only a visual record but a deeply personal response to each subject.
For Helen, inspiration is often related to the quality of the light that attends a moment or defines a subject. In recalling that experience and conveying the dynamics of it in her work, the process of painting becomes intensely meaningful as she relives and shares with the viewer her most treasured responses. The recipient of many prizes Helen has been a selected finalist for many national portrait awards and juried exhibitions including twice in the official Archibald S.H.Ervin Salon des Refuses, four times in the Black Swan Portrait Prize W.A, the Fleurieu Landscape Prize S.A, the Shirley Hannan N.S.W, the Mortimore Prize N.S.W, the A.M.E.Bale Vic and the James Farrell Self Portrait Award Vic. In 2013 her portrait of 'The Seekers' was acquired by The National Portrait Gallery in Canberra as part of their permanent collection and in June 2014 her portrait of Claudia Chan Shaw will be part of a special exhibition at The Australian embassy in Washington D.C. Her work with Fusion 6 artists including About Face and their most recent project Detour is a most meaningful and satisfying involvement. Other memberships include Portrait Artists Australia and Helen is a Fellow of The Australian Guild Of Realist Artists.
