In the 80’s
Joe worked with Harold Freedman on his renowned murals.
In the 90’s he co-established The Melbourne
Mural Studio.
Portraits are
Joe’s forte, capturing the emotion and mood of people
from all walks of life. Joe uses chiaroscuro to give the
sense of dramatic presence.
His landscapes
are ethereal, evocative and dramatic capturing the pristine
majesty of Gods creation, conveying the unique transparent
quality of Australian trees and the pure Australian opalescent
skies.
Joe has won
many awards, most notably the Alice Bale Award for oil
painting; the John Balmain Award for figure drawing; the
Tom Roberts Award for portraiture, (Heidelberg Heritage
Artists); AGRA Winter prize; and was a finalist for the
Camberwell Travel Grant Award and the Alice Bale Travel
Award. He was also the AGRA Aspects of Excellence Winner
in 2002.
